Working smarter in the installation sector

Demand for installation work is growing, while fitters and work planners are scarce and pressure on planning, execution, and service is increasing. Finding new skilled workers remains important, but the biggest gains are often made by working smarter with your current team.

Many installation companies lose time due to full schedules, urgent jobs, administration, travel time, breakdowns, failure costs and knowledge that is mainly held by experienced technicians. In the 'Learning Network Smarter Working' programme, you will discover where time is leaking from your work process and where immediate gains can be made.

Themes from installation practice

Preparation, planning & AI

How do you save time in preparation and planning? How do you ensure technicians are sent out with better information? How can you use AI or digital tools for quotes, work orders, breakdowns, and administration?

Prefabrication and standardisation

Which tasks, materials, or methods can be standardised or prepared in advance, so that the work on-site proceeds more quickly and without errors?

Predictive maintenance & service

How do you use data from heat pumps, climate control systems, air handling units, or building management systems to better plan maintenance, detect faults earlier, and deploy engineers more effectively?

Handover, collaboration & knowledge sharing

How do you capture and share technician knowledge so that new colleagues can work independently more quickly? How do you improve the handover between sales, estimation, work preparation, planning, execution, service, and administration?

Real-world example

A installation company notices that engineers regularly have to return to customers because information from the survey, quote, or work order is missing. Within the network, the company maps out the process together with experts and fellow entrepreneurs.

The solution turns out not to be one large investment, but a combination of a fixed work preparation checklist, clearer handovers, standard material sets, and digital photos/notes on the work order. The result: fewer return visits, a calmer schedule, and engineers who set off better prepared.

The principle: start small, with one concrete case, and from there work on improvements that suit your company.

Important information

The Smart Working Learning Network is a practical programme for SMEs in the installation sector within the Brainport region. You will work with fellow installers, experts by experience, and specialists on one central question:

How can you plan, prepare, install and maintain smarter with the people you already have?

Your own work process is central. We look not only at technology, but also at how the work is organised: task allocation, coordination, leadership, handover, knowledge sharing and collaboration in the primary process.

Think about AI, digital work orders, remote monitoring, predictive maintenance, prefabrication, standardisation and digital planning, as well as smarter collaboration. Where appropriate, we will align with existing knowledge, regulations and offerings from industry and training providers.

You are participating with a group of fellow SMEs from the installation sector in your area.

• Kick-off + 3 knowledge and working sessions, spread over approximately six months
• on Thursday afternoons from 15:30 to 18:30, including a light meal
• with experts by experience, industry experts and knowledge partners
•    exchange with other installation companies from the region
• working on your own practice-related question
• guidance in creating a concrete action plan
exploring potential financing, schemes, or subsidies as solutions for investment requirements

The Learning Network 'Working Smarter' is part of Slimmer Vooruit!: labour market solutions for sustainability professionals in the Brainport region.
Slimmer Vooruit! is made possible by the Southeast Brabant and Helmond-De Peel labour market regions. In addition to smarter working, there are solutions for broader recruitment, employability, and retention of skilled workers.

You will create a concrete action plan for your installation company, with guidance. You decide for yourself what you address and at what pace. The action plan will help make time wastage visible, streamline processes, and choose follow-up steps that suit your company.
Potential benefits: reduced travel time, lower failure costs, decreased administrative workload, more billable hours, improved collaboration, and higher productivity with the same team.

Participation is free of charge. Any investments in software, material, process improvement or implementation are not automatically part of the programme. However, we will look into possible arrangements, subsidies or funding routes.
